| An introduction to the civilisation and history of ancient Rome, with particular reference to the Republic and Early Empire. Topics include the Samnite and Punic Wars; expansion into the Eastern Mediterranean; the Gracchi, the Social War; the civil wars and the political economy of the Late Republic; Julius Caesar; the Principate under the Julio-Claudian, Flavian, "adoptive," and Severan emperors; the turmoil of the third century; Aurelianus; the dominate of Diocletianus; Constantinus Magnus, his new capital, and Christianity; division of the Empire; the fall of the Western Empire.

| This course will explore some of the major ideas and events that have shaped world history since 1900: the Bolshevik Revolution, fascism, the World Wars, the Cold War, the Arab-Israeli Wars. Among the topics to be covered are emergence of military dictatorships following decolonisation, the Kashmir crisis, Asian independence, the collapse of the USSR, democracy movements and the growth of capitalism in China, Islamic militancy and America's current 'war on terror'.
